January is Poverty Awareness Month, a month-long initiative to raise awareness and call attention to the growth of poverty in America. The United States is considered the richest country in the world, yet 37.9 million of its residents live in poverty. Over 12.5 million of these people are children.  Poverty is a complex societal issue, but access to food and shelter should not be.
